About Alex Thompson

Alex Thompson serves on REI’s leadership team as vice president of communications and public affairs. As an officer of the co-op, he oversees how REI, one of Fortune’s Top 100 employers for the last 19 years, engages with 12,000 employees across 144 stores, with government officials at both state and local levels and with all stakeholders who affect REI’s 6 million members’ lives outdoors. This includes the 300 non-profits that REI works with under its Stewardship Initiatives.

Before joining REI in 2014, Alex specialized in international communications and marketing consultancy for small and large organizations in the for-profit, not-for-profit and public sectors. He focused particularly on energy, health and transport and is keenly interested in how business can be a force for good. Serving as a consultant for more than a decade at the world’s largest public relations company, Edelman, Alex held various roles on three continents, including leading cross-divisional international teams for Fortune 50 companies. Latterly, Alex was as an Executive Vice President on Edelman’s Business + Social Purpose team in New York, which specialized in connecting business strategy with social mission and impact. Alex began his career as a volunteer teacher oversees and studied politics and philosophy at the University of Leeds. He is on the board of the Washington Environmental Council and a member of the Arthur Page Society. Alex has spoken on the subject of ethics in business for The Ethisphere Institute and is a board advisor for Sustainable Brands.
